**DUE TO FEEDBACK ABOUT THE GRAMMAR/PUNCTUATION THIS BOOK HAS BEEN PROFESSIONALLY PROOF READ AND EDITED ON 1st OCTOBER 2014**

Tom Fulwood, the future Earl of Standish discovers at the age of fifteen that marriage can destroy a man, namely his father. His mother prefers entertaining men in her bedroom, while her husband sits downstairs, unable or unwilling to respond to his wife’s inappropriate behaviour. From that day on Tom vows that no woman will hurt him the way his mother hurt his father. For the next seventeen years Tom works hard to become one of the most notorious rakes London society has ever seen, successfully keeping all the women of his acquaintance at a distance.

In 1810 twenty-four year old Isabelle Crawford had been brought up hearing stories of how much in love her dead parents were and had expected to find similar happiness when she came out in society. Reality was different to what she had imagined though, instead of love, she found fortune hunters and as a result left London to set up home in Bath. Her two elder brothers had supported her decision, although they would have rather seen their sister married instead of choosing what was seen by the ton as an eccentric decision, a young woman living a single life in Bath with a cousin as chaperone.

A potential marriage between Tom and Isabelle’s brother and sister, throws the couple together and sets in motion a chain of events that will see Tom fighting for his life and Isabelle being kidnapped by the very man that Tom had found in his mother’s bedchamber all those years ago.

I decided to read this because I was curious about the huge disparity in reviews. The book was only 99c so I had nothing to lose. I do recognise that there were a few grammar errors and a few other minor errors but they didn't seriously detract from what in essence was a good story. I liked the author's writing style and the book kept me interested despite the up's and down's between the main characters. The H had clearly suffered due to his upbringing and it gave him a fear of marriage and a distrust of women. The h hadn't met anyone she wanted to marry and had settled into an independent life in Bath. All of it was believable and I enjoyed the way the relationship developed between the H and h. This was a clean romance with only kissing and the rest being left up to our imagination.

This book was well worth reading especially in view of the price.

The Complicated Earl A Regency Romance edition by Audrey Harrison Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The book felt very slow to me with every point stated at least 3 times. The characters were not interesting and their problems less so. I was hoping for a little bit more Georgette Heyer and less rather pedestrian and obvious writing. Heyer was subtle and outrageously, slyly funny. This book is not and, alas, I could not finish it, which is rare for me. If you like, tell me what I missed!
This was an excellent regency set in Bath for the most part. I loved the witty exchanges between the hero and heroine. The main misconception became a little tedious but I definitely enjoyed the drama and ensuing action. This was not a fast paced story but it was not ponderous either. It was a delightful length and moved along steadily. I enjoyed all the characters but I wish Mr. Beckett had been given more explanation, I don't even recall his first name. Very highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
Good use of dramaand passion but i always worry as this author killed off a bext loved character one time instead of giving her the hea she deserved. I hope she does not do that again so i can trust her as a writer.
Isabelle never knew her parents, but knew they had been deeply in love from stories her older brothers shared. Tom's parents had an unsuccessful marriage and Tom's mother openly carried on her affairs completely disillusioning her son. As an adult, Tom refuses to marry having been warned by his father that any wife Tom would take would treat him in the same manner. Isabelle is sick and tired of being sought after only for her money, so she moves to Bath with her cousin as a companion. It isn't that she doesn't want to get married some day, but she refuses to marry for any reason but love. Tom and Isabelle meet in Bath and there is a lot of chemistry between them, but will Tom ever be able to trust a woman enough to allow himself to fall in love and take a chance on marriage? It's a lovely story. The characters are well developed. There are many grammatical errors, so I only gave it four stars.
I was also a little confused and conflicted by the reviews on this book...but I loved it! Good story but the characters were real! Flawed, strong, weak, conflicted even while convinced they know their own minds...but still willing to change their minds and smart enough to do so! Ok, yes, it was a little predictable, but thats why we read these books anyway. I did think it was a little wordy, and do agree that some of the sentences/grammer could have been improved, but as a very fast reader, I don't allow these things to deter me if I like the story and people in them. The only part of the book I felt was a tad off, (spoiler alert here) was the amazing recovery and subsequent "real" happpiness for James. Other than that, the characters were wonderful. AND...this I really liked...not all conflicts were "fixed"....yep...the main character decides to shrug and let someone be unhappy with her and her decisons. Loved it. Oh, there's a villian too, but he's a milksop all in all...our heroine handles him nicely...no waiting to be rescued for this lady; she takes care of herself. I had selected another by this author at the same time and can't wait to get started on it. Hope to not be disappointed. Go ahead and give this book a spin...I thought it was fun.
Basically, this story was good. My criticism was that the author is apparently not acquainted with the use of commas, nor the use of semi-colons. Sentences such as, "Only what one would expect of someone in love, I am looking forward to making her acquaintance..." just annoy the crap out of me. (Yes, I am a snob, but I am too old to change now.) The fact that this happened over and over again in this book tells me that it was not a single mistake. Sometimes her adjectives were ill chosen "taking in the rich decoration and fine wooden furniture...." Really? Wooden? Did they have any other kind in the Regency period? (I find these types of things very distracting; can you tell?) Several times, I had to reread a sentence more than once to understand the context. More than once, I thought, "Wouldn't he remember the name of the man he caught with his mother?", so that plot device was a bit lame. Still, it was a good story with good characters. With a brush-up on grammar and a thesaurus, hopefully future books will be better. I am going to read another book by this author...here's hoping I can put my snobbishness aside again and just enjoy the story. (How does one contact about proofreader positions?!)
Could have been a five star book, but I could not finish it. I have enjoyed other works by this author, but not this one. If you are a fan of Georgette Heyer you will be frustrated with this book. Some of the dialog is convoluted or not to period. The scene where I gave up was a ball at some guy's house who had previously offered for the heroine. He practically tells her that he slept with the hero's mother and hints at a possible sexual attack on the heroine. The conversation is just not right for the period. The next time the heroine speaks with the hero increased my annoyance to the point where I just gave up on the book. This could be a really great story and began with a lovely premise and plot, but it needs some polishing.
I decided to read this because I was curious about the huge disparity in reviews. The book was only 99c so I had nothing to lose.
