I must confess that I've read through Song of Songs numerous times without giving it much extra thought. Yes, it is beautiful and even titillating. But not much else has ever come to me beyond that. Daniel Akin has opened my eyes to a deeper, richer understanding of this wonderful, little book. Dr. Akin manages to accomplish two goals very well in his exposition: He presents a scholarly treatment of the book within the context of Solomon's day with its rich metaphors and vivid imagery as well as within the context of the Bible as a whole. In addition he has written his commentary as a practical guide to marriage. I recommend churches using this book not only with the married of their congregations, but also with their college students and singles. Akin shows us a beautiful, inspirational view of marriage, undoing much of the damage and disillusionment with which our culture has poisoned its view of marriage. And there is much practical application material to use with married couples. As we know from Ephesians, Revelation, etc. relationships between Christ and the church is that of husband and wife. In every passage Dr. Akin draws out the many parallels that point us to Christ and his church. Enthusiastically recommended.

GET. THIS. BOOK. Dr. Akin is an amazing communicator--funny, passionate, knowledgeable, and steadfastly devoted to Jesus. This book will no doubt encourage you to love your spouse and love the Bridegroom more.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. So good.
Mr Akin does a great job here. Each section goes into exploring the text context, setting, cultural references. Then he gives a lot of practical suggestions for applying what were reading. He ends each chapter with how the song really reflects Christ and our relationship with him as our bridegroom. An excellent guide.
“Exalting Jesus in Song of Songs” provides food for the head and heart. Each unit includes a section dealing with the text, a practical applications section, a section called “How Does This Section Exalt Christ?” and “Reflect and Discuss” questions. The book has many illuminating illustrations, and is sprinkled with humor. The “Gallantry is a virtue that dare not speak its name” illustration was one of my favorites, and the cats and dogs list was hilarious. Well done.
